Dog Days

The summertime clock is tick-ticking away
And so, this afternoon, today
I sit on the dock, and here I will stay
Come what may
Until the evening of the day

Summertime in Vermont is fleeting indeed
To the weather gods I cajole, beg and plead
About my warm weather preferences and need
But to me they would never, ever concede
To change their Vermont cold winter weather creed

So I take book, umbrella and sunblock
And spend my afternoon upon the lake dock
Though the more disciplined might suffer from shock
On another day all my chores I’ll take stock
But today I take heed of the summertime clock

The Nantucket Blues

Nantucket’s the topic of many a poem
But alas, it’s a place I never have roamed

I hear it’s an isle in the grand state of Mass
Some write rhymes about it ever so crass

My little efforts are far more G-rated
I allude to some stuff but it’s all understated

And lest I’m accused of being a prude
I’d rather be boring than risk being crude

Berry Wary

Roses are red
Black raspberries are, umm, black
This little ditty will prove
That I’m a poetic hack

I like black raspberries
They make me say the word “yum”
But right now they are causing me
A peculiar conundrum

Their bushes are close by
On the outskirts of my yard
So what’s the problem you may ask
That makes picking them so hard?

The berries are beautiful
They’re ripening quite nicely
But here’s the situation
That makes picking them rather dicey

The berries are entwined
Amongst a very dangerous vine
This plant has leaves three
And yes those leaves do shine

Protected by poison ivy
I’ll leave the berries be
Perhaps the birds will eat them
But those berries are safe from me

Roses are red
Black raspberries are, umm, black
And that’s the latest news
From the outskirts of my Vermont shack
